How to Use the Tip Calculator and Split a Bill
Calculate a tip table, enter a custom gratuity, divide a bill evenly, reverse-calculate a tip rate, copy results, and avoid included charges.
How does this guide help you use the Tip & Split Bill Calculator?
This guide explains which values to enter, how the Tip & Split Bill Calculator processes them, and how to read the resulting estimate. Follow the sections below to check assumptions, compare realistic scenarios, avoid common input mistakes, and understand when an official source or qualified professional should take priority over a planning result.
Before You Start
Review the receipt for mandatory gratuity, service charges, taxes, discounts, and fees. Decide which amount you want to use as the tip base and whether the bill will be divided equally. The calculator does not decide local custom or remove included charges automatically.
Compare Common Tip Rates
In Tip Calculator, enter the price and select Calculate. The result table displays the tip amount and final total for 5%, 10%, 12%, 14%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%, 30%, and 50%. These are comparison values rather than recommendations.
Find a Tip from the Final Total
Enter the original bill and the final amount paid. The final total must be at least as large as the bill. The calculator subtracts the bill to find the tip and then divides by the original bill to find the effective tip rate.
Enter Currency and Percentage Values
Fields accept plain numbers and common formatting such as dollar signs, percent signs, commas, and spaces. For example, $1,250.50 is interpreted as 1250.50. The output is formatted as U.S. dollars, but the arithmetic also works for another currency when every entered amount uses that same currency.
Read and Copy the Results
Money results display two decimal places. Select a result value to copy it; the control briefly confirms that it was copied. The displayed result does not change the original inputs, so you can compare or revise the rate and calculate again.
Check Automatic Gratuity and Service Charges
Do not assume a line described as gratuity is voluntary. Under IRS guidance, a required amount set by the business is a service charge rather than a customer-determined tip. If a mandatory charge is already included, decide whether any additional voluntary amount is intended before calculating.
Worked Shared-Bill Setup
Enter $55 as the bill, 20 as the tip percentage, and 2 people. Select Calculate. The calculator returns an $11 tip, $66 total, $5.50 tip per person, and $33 total per person. These values reconcile because $33 × 2 = $66.
Assumptions and Limitations
- The entered bill is treated as the complete tip base.
- Shared mode divides all amounts equally and does not allocate individual items.
- All money inputs are assumed to use one currency.
- Display values round to two decimal places; unequal cent allocation is not assigned to specific people.
- The tool does not determine local custom, legal requirements, tax treatment, or whether a charge reaches a worker.
