Tip Calculator Formula, Bill Split, and Reverse Tip
Review the tip amount, final total, equal bill split, reverse tip percentage, variable definitions, validation rules, and worked calculations.
How do the Tip & Split Bill Calculator formulas work?
This formula page defines the variables used by the Tip & Split Bill Calculator, shows how those values are combined, and explains the order of operations behind the result. Use the worked steps to verify an estimate, compare scenarios, and understand which assumptions or rounding rules can affect the displayed answer.
Formula Overview
The forward calculation multiplies the entered bill by the chosen percentage, adds the result to the bill, and optionally divides both amounts by the party size. The reverse calculation subtracts the original bill from the final total and converts that difference back into a percentage.
Variable Definitions
- B: entered bill or tip base
- R: entered tip rate as a percentage
- P: whole-number count of people
- T: calculated tip amount
- F: final amount including the tip
- Tₚ: tip per person
- Fₚ: total per person
Tip Amount Formula
Dividing the entered percentage by 100 converts it to a decimal rate before multiplication.
Final Bill Total Formula
The calculator adds only the computed tip. Taxes, discounts, service charges, and fees affect the result only when they are already included in the entered bill.
Equal Per-Person Split
The party size must be a whole number of at least one. The model assumes every person pays the same share.
Reverse Tip Formula
The original bill must be greater than zero, and the final total must be equal to or greater than the bill.
Currency Display and Rounding
The engine retains its numeric result through the calculation. Currency output is then formatted to exactly two decimal places, while a reverse tip percentage displays up to two decimal places. With equal splits, independently displayed shares can leave a one-cent allocation question; the calculator does not assign that extra cent to a particular person.
Worked Tip and Split Calculation
For a $55 bill, 20% tip, and 2 people:
For an $80 original bill and $100 final total, the reverse formula gives a $20 tip and 25% rate.
Assumptions and Boundaries
- Bill and tip percentage must be zero or greater.
- Reverse mode requires an original bill greater than zero.
- The final reverse total cannot be below the original bill.
- Party size is an integer of at least one.
- All money values use one currency.
- The entered bill is the intended base; no tax or fee adjustment occurs automatically.
