How to Measure Floor, Wall, Shower, and Backsplash Tile
Measure tile areas, subtract openings, verify tile and box sizes, choose an explicit waste allowance, and prepare a practical tile order.
How does this guide help you use the Tile Calculator?
This guide explains which values to enter, how the Tile Calculator processes them, and how to read the resulting estimate. Follow the sections below to check assumptions, compare realistic scenarios, avoid common input mistakes, and understand when an official source or qualified professional should take priority over a planning result.
Before You Start
Gather dimensions for every tiled surface, the combined area of large untiled openings, the selected tile's nominal dimensions, pieces per box, and current box price. Sketch the pattern, orientation, edges, and major cuts before choosing waste.
Measure Each Surface
Measure rectangular floors and walls as length multiplied by width or height. Use Number of areas for identical sections. Calculate different tile products or waste assumptions separately.
Break an irregular room into nonoverlapping rectangles. For shower walls, measure each wall face independently so openings and repeated sections remain clear.
Subtract Untiled Openings Carefully
Enter the combined area of large doors, windows, cabinets, or other surfaces that will not receive tile. Small penetrations may not reduce purchase quantity because a full tile still must be cut around them.
The excluded area must remain smaller than the total surface area; the calculator rejects an impossible zero or negative net area.
Verify Tile and Package Details
Enter the tile face length and width in the same unit. Then enter pieces per box and price from the exact selected product. Tile sizes, package quantities, and listed coverage can differ between products that look similar.
If the package lists coverage, compare it with the calculated face-area coverage and ask the supplier about any difference.
Plan Layout and Waste
The waste field allows for cuts, breakage, pattern alignment, and repair stock. A simple straight layout and a complex diagonal or patterned layout may need different allowances. Dry-plan the actual tile and confirm the chosen percentage before ordering.
How to Read the Results
Base tiles cover net area before waste. Order tiles include the entered waste percentage. Whole boxes round that order upward to packages, while purchased tiles and purchased coverage show what those boxes contain. Review the Tile Calculator guide assumptions before relying on this result for decisions.
Spare tiles equal purchased pieces minus the base count, so they include both planned waste and any surplus created by box rounding.
Material and Labor Cost
Material cost multiplies whole boxes by the entered price per box. Labor cost multiplies net square feet by the entered labor rate. The combined estimate excludes mortar, grout, trim, membranes, demolition, delivery, taxes, substrate work, and other charges unless already included in the rates.
Ordering Checklist
- Confirm every tiled surface and excluded opening.
- Dry-plan pattern, orientation, grout joints, edges, and cuts.
- Verify tile dimensions, pieces per box, coverage, and dye lot.
- Enter an explicit waste allowance appropriate to the layout.
- Round to whole boxes and consider matching repair stock.
- Plan setting materials, substrate preparation, delivery, and labor separately.
Assumptions and Limitations
- Each entered area is treated as a uniform rectangle.
- Tile face area uses the entered nominal dimensions.
- Excluded area is subtracted once from total surface area.
- Waste applies after base pieces round upward.
- Boxes and individual tile counts round upward.
- Exact row, joint, cut, trim, and pattern requirements are not calculated.
