Tile Calculator Examples for Floors, Walls, and Boxes

Follow checked tile examples for a 120-square-foot floor, wall openings, metric tile dimensions, waste, whole boxes, purchased coverage, and project cost.

How should you use these Tile Calculator examples?

These examples turn the Tile Calculator inputs into complete scenarios with stated values, calculation steps, and interpreted results. Use them to check how the calculator behaves, compare your own situation with realistic cases, and identify which inputs have the greatest effect before relying on an estimate.

Example 1: 120 ft² Floor with 12 × 24 Tile

A 10 ft × 12 ft floor has 120 ft². One 12 × 24 inch tile covers 2 ft²:

120÷2=60 base tiles120\div2=60\ base\ tiles

With 10% waste, the order target is 66 tiles. At 8 tiles per box, rounding upward requires 9 boxes, or 72 purchased tiles. Purchased coverage is 144 ft² and the purchase contains 12 tiles beyond the base count.

Example 2: Material and Labor Cost

Nine boxes at $40 each cost $360. An entered labor rate of $5 per net square foot adds $600, producing a combined estimate of $960 before mortar, grout, trim, membranes, delivery, tax, and substrate preparation.

Example 3: Two Walls Minus an Opening

Two 8 ft × 5 ft walls total 80 ft². Subtracting an 8 ft² opening leaves 72 ft². With 12 × 24 inch tile and no waste, the calculation requires 36 base tiles. At 10 tiles per box, the order rounds to four boxes and 40 purchased tiles.

Example 4: Metric Surface and Tile

A 3.048 m × 3.6576 m surface is exactly 120 ft². Tiles measuring 30.48 × 60.96 cm each cover 2 ft², reproducing the same 60-tile base estimate and nine-box order when the 10% waste and eight-piece package assumptions remain unchanged.

Reproduce an Example

  1. Open the Tile Calculator.
  2. Enter the stated project dimensions, quantity, and excluded area.
  3. Enter the tile length, width, and unit.
  4. Set the stated waste percentage and tiles per box.
  5. Enter prices or labor only when the example uses them.
  6. Select Calculate and compare the engine-backed result with the displayed value.
