Sales Tax Calculator Examples

Follow three checked sales tax examples for adding tax, removing included tax, and finding the implied combined sales tax rate.

How should you use these Sales Tax Calculator examples?

These examples turn the Sales Tax Calculator inputs into complete scenarios with stated values, calculation steps, and interpreted results. Use them to check how the calculator behaves, compare your own situation with realistic cases, and identify which inputs have the greatest effect before relying on an estimate.

Three Sales Tax Calculator Examples

These scenarios use the same production engine as the Sales Tax Calculator. They show how to add tax, remove tax already included in a total, and calculate an implied combined rate.

Example 1: Add Sales Tax to a Purchase

A purchase has a $100.00 taxable price and an 8.25% combined rate. Convert 8.25% to 0.0825, multiply by the price, and add the tax.

100.00×0.0825=8.25100.00\times0.0825=8.25
100.00+8.25=108.25100.00+8.25=108.25

Result: $8.25 sales tax and $108.25total price.

Example 2: Remove Included Sales Tax

A receipt total is $216.50 and the applicable combined rate is 8.25%. Divide the total by 1.0825 rather than subtracting 8.25% from the total.

216.50÷1.0825=200.00216.50\div1.0825=200.00
216.50−200.00=16.50216.50-200.00=16.50

Result: $200.00 before tax and $16.50included tax.

Example 3: Find the Implied Sales Tax Rate

A taxable price of $50.00 becomes $54.00. Subtract to find the tax, divide by the pre-tax price, and convert the decimal to a percentage.

54.00−50.00=4.0054.00-50.00=4.00
(4.0050.00)×100=8.00%\left(\frac{4.00}{50.00}\right)\times100=8.00\%

Result: $4.00 tax and an implied rate of 8.00%.
