Salary Calculator Formulas Explained
Understand hourly, daily, weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, monthly, and annual salary formulas, unpaid time, work hours, and rounding.
How do the Salary Calculator formulas work?
This formula page defines the variables used by the Salary Calculator, shows how those values are combined, and explains the order of operations behind the result. Use the worked steps to verify an estimate, compare scenarios, and understand which assumptions or rounding rules can affect the displayed answer.
Formula Overview
The engine converts the entered amount to scheduled annual gross pay, then divides that annual value by each target frequency factor. A second path applies the ratio of worked days to scheduled workdays.
Hourly, daily, weekly, and biweekly factors use the entered work schedule. Semi-monthly, monthly, quarterly, and annual factors use fixed calendar counts.
Variable Definitions
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|

| Dw | Scheduled workdays per week | Days |
| Wy | Working weeks per year | Weeks |
| H, V | Entered holidays and vacation days | Days |
| Au | Unpaid-time-adjusted annual gross pay | Currency per year |
Pay-Period Factors
| Frequency | Periods per year |
|---|---|
| Hourly | Hours per week × weeks per year |
| Daily | Days per week × weeks per year |
| Weekly | Weeks per year |
| Biweekly | Weeks per year ÷ 2 |
| Semi-monthly | 24 |
| Monthly | 12 |

| Annual | 1 |
Scheduled Annual Gross Pay
For hourly pay, multiply the rate by hours per week and weeks per year. For monthly pay, multiply by 12. For annual pay, the period factor is 1.
Convert Annual Pay to Another Frequency
The engine annualizes once and then divides by each target factor. This keeps all displayed pay periods tied to the same scheduled annual gross amount.
With 52 weeks, biweekly uses 26 periods. Semi-monthly always uses 24, so those paycheck amounts are not interchangeable.
Scheduled and Worked Days and Hours
Ds and Ts are scheduled workdays and hours. Da and Ta are the corresponding values after entered unpaid days.
Unpaid Time-Off Adjustment
The formula assumes the entered holiday and vacation days reduce gross pay in proportion to scheduled workdays. Enter zero for fully paid leave.
Effective Hourly Amount for Worked Time
This metric divides scheduled annual gross pay by hours remaining after entered time off. It is a comparison metric, not a legal regular rate or overtime rate.
Worked Calculation: $50 per Hour
Use $50 per hour, 40 hours per week, 5 days per week, 52 weeks, 10 holidays, and 15 vacation days.
- Scheduled hours: 40 × 52 = 2080.00.
- Scheduled annual gross: $50 × 2,080 = $104,000.00.
- Scheduled workdays: 5 × 52 = 260.00.
- Worked days: 260 - 10 - 15 = 235.00.
- Adjusted annual gross: $104,000 × 235 ÷ 260 = $94,000.00.
- Gross reduction: $10,000.00.
- Effective hourly amount for worked time: $55.32.
Assumptions and Rounding
- The entered amount is gross pay before taxes and deductions.
- The schedule and entered pay rate remain constant for the modeled year.
- Holiday and vacation fields represent unpaid days only.
- Calendar frequencies use 24 semi-monthly, 12 monthly, and 4 quarterly periods.
- Bonuses, commissions, overtime, payroll taxes, benefits, and exchange-rate conversion are excluded.
- Decimal.js performs base-10 arithmetic; displayed currency rounds to two decimal places.
Formula FAQ
Why does annual-to-hourly depend on the schedule?
The hourly divisor equals hours per week multiplied by weeks per year. Different schedules have different annual hours. For a useful Salary Calculator formula result, use realistic inputs, compare relevant scenarios, and review the stated assumptions before making a decision.
Why are biweekly and semi-monthly results different?
Biweekly uses half the entered weeks per year, normally 26 periods for 52 weeks. Semi-monthly uses 24 periods. For a useful Salary Calculator formula result, use realistic inputs, compare relevant scenarios, and review the stated assumptions before making a decision.
Should paid vacation reduce annual salary?
No. Enter zero when the leave remains paid at the normal rate. For a useful Salary Calculator formula result, enter realistic values, compare relevant scenarios, check the calculation details, and review the definitions, assumptions, and limitations before using the estimate for an important decision.
Is effective hourly pay an overtime rate?
No. It is only scheduled annual gross divided by modeled worked hours. For a useful Salary Calculator formula result, enter realistic values, compare relevant scenarios, check the calculation details, and review the definitions, assumptions, and limitations before using the estimate for an important decision.
