Protein Calculator Formula
Review protein-by-weight formulas for daily grams, g/kg and g/lb conversion, protein per meal, protein Calories, calorie share, and a worked calculation.
How do the Protein Calculator formulas work?
This formula page defines the variables used by the Protein Calculator, shows how those values are combined, and explains the order of operations behind the result. Use the worked steps to verify an estimate, compare scenarios, and understand which assumptions or rounding rules can affect the displayed answer.
Formula Overview
The core protein calculator formula multiplies body weight by a user-selected protein rate. Separate calculations use the lower, upper, and comparison rates. Supporting formulas calculate the midpoint, an even per-meal amount, protein Calories, and calorie share.
Variable Definitions
| Symbol | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Body weight | kilograms | |
| Body weight | pounds | |
| Lower protein rate | g/kg/day | |
| Upper protein rate | g/kg/day | |
| Comparison protein rate | g/kg/day | |
| Meals or eating occasions | whole number per day | |
| Entered daily energy | Calories per day |
Daily Protein Range Formula
is the lower daily amount and is the upper daily amount. Both outputs are grams per day.
Pounds, Kilograms, g/lb, and g/kg Conversions
Multiplying pounds by g/lb/day gives the same daily grams as multiplying the equivalent kilograms by the equivalent g/kg/day rate. The calculator normalizes both values so changing the display unit does not create a different biological scenario.
Range Midpoint and Comparison Formula
The midpoint is only the arithmetic center of the selected range. The comparison amount is calculated independently from the editable comparison rate.
Protein per Meal Formula
This is an even-distribution planning calculation. It does not model meal timing, digestion, amino-acid composition, or food quality.
Protein Calories and Calorie Share
FDA nutrition materials use 4 Calories per gram of protein. The percentage depends on the daily calorie value entered by the user.
Worked Protein Calculation
For 70 kg, 1.20 to 1.60 g/kg/day, four meals, and 2,000 Calories:
Validation, Precision, and Rounding
The engine rejects missing or out-of-range values, requires a whole-number meal count, and prevents the lower rate from exceeding the upper rate. Calculations use the normalized numeric inputs. Displayed results are rounded to two decimal places, so adding rounded values by hand can differ slightly from the underlying result.
Formula Assumptions and Limits
- The calculation is weight based and does not estimate lean body mass.
- The rate is supplied by the user and is not selected from a diagnosis or activity profile.
- Per-meal values assume an even split.
- Protein Calories use 4 Calories per gram.
- The model does not calculate protein quality, digestibility, amino acids, or specific foods.
Protein Formula FAQ
Can I calculate protein directly from pounds?
Yes. Multiply pounds by a g/lb/day rate. Do not multiply pounds by a g/kg/day rate. The Protein Calculator keeps the weight and rate units paired automatically. Use realistic inputs and review the Protein Calculator formula assumptions before relying on this result for decisions.
Why do g/kg and g/lb rates look different?
One kilogram equals about 2.20462 pounds, so the number of grams assigned per pound is smaller. Correctly converted rates produce the same daily grams. Use realistic inputs and review the Protein Calculator formula assumptions before relying on this result for decisions.
Is the midpoint a recommended target?
No. It is the mathematical average of the lower and upper results selected by the user. For a useful Protein Calculator formula result, enter realistic values, compare relevant scenarios, check the calculation details, and review the definitions, assumptions, and limitations before using the estimate for an important decision.
