Investment Calculator Examples With Solutions
Review three investment examples for monthly contributions, fee drag, inflation, return scenarios, and solving a contribution for a $500,000 goal.
How should you use these Investment Calculator examples?
These examples turn the Investment Calculator inputs into complete scenarios with stated values, calculation steps, and interpreted results. Use them to check how the calculator behaves, compare your own situation with realistic cases, and identify which inputs have the greatest effect before relying on an estimate.
Three Investment Calculator Examples
These scenarios use the same engine as the Investment Calculator. They show monthly investing without fees, the impact of fees and inflation, and a monthly contribution solved for a $500,000 target.
Example 1: Invest $500 Monthly for 20 Years
Start with $10,000, contribute $500 at each month-end, project 20 years, assume a 7% effective annual return, and set fees and inflation to zero.
| Initial investment | $10,000.00 |
|---|---|
| 240 monthly contributions | $120,000.00 |
| Total contributions | $130,000.00 |
| Ending balance | $292,465.03 |
| Net investment growth | $162,465.03 |
The result combines growth on the initial balance with the future value of the month-end contribution stream. It assumes the same effective annual return every year.
Example 2: Add a 0.25% Fee and 2.5% Inflation
Keep the same starting balance, deposits, time, and return. Add a 0.25% annual investment fee and a 2.5% inflation assumption.
| Ending balance with fees | $282,998.81 |
|---|---|
| Fees deducted | $5,894.46 |
| Fee-free ending balance | $292,465.03 |
| Fee drag | $9,466.22 |
| Value in today's dollars | $172,705.95 |
Fee drag exceeds the sum of fees because deducted dollars no longer earn later returns. Inflation changes only the purchasing-power estimate, not the nominal ending balance.
Return sensitivity after 20 years
| 5% lower-return path | $222,372.49 |
|---|---|
| 7% base-return path | $282,998.81 |
| 9% higher-return path | $362,768.19 |
These three smooth paths are sensitivity scenarios. They do not assign a probability to any outcome.
Example 3: Solve for a $500,000 Goal
Keep the $10,000 starting balance, 20-year horizon, 7% return, 0.25% fee, 2.5% inflation, month-end timing, and no annual contribution increase. Ask for the starting monthly contribution needed to reach $500,000.
| Target balance | $500,000.00 |
|---|---|
| Starting monthly contribution needed | $940.72 |
| Total contributions | $235,771.88 |
| Projected ending balance | $500,000.00 |
| Net investment growth | $264,228.12 |
| Fee drag | $16,144.53 |
The solver uses the complete monthly engine. It is a scenario result, not a savings recommendation or an assessment of whether the target, return, or contribution is suitable.
Compare the Three Investment Scenarios
| Scenario | Monthly contribution | Ending balance | Net growth | Fee drag |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No fees or inflation | $500.00 | $292,465.03 | $162,465.03 | $0.00 |
| Fees and inflation entered | $500.00 | $282,998.81 | $152,998.81 | $9,466.22 |
| $500,000 target contribution | $940.72 | $500,000.00 | $264,228.12 | $16,144.53 |
Example 1 isolates growth. Example 2 keeps the same deposits while adding costs and a purchasing-power view. Example 3 changes the monthly contribution to solve a different planning question.
Reproduce the Results
- Open the Investment Calculator and select Reset.
- Enter $10,000, $500 monthly, 20 years, 7%, and end-of-month contributions.
- For Example 1, enter 0% fees and 0% inflation.
- For Example 2, enter 0.25% fees, 2.5% inflation, a 2-point return range, and a $500,000 target.
- For Example 3, keep those assumptions and replace $500 with the displayed required contribution.
- Calculate and compare ending balance, net growth, fees, fee drag, real value, goal status, return paths, and the annual schedule.
