Basic Calculator Operations and Rules

Review arithmetic formulas, operator precedence, percentage conversion, and the rules used by the Basic Calculator.

How do the Basic Calculator formulas work?

This formula page defines the variables used by the Basic Calculator, shows how those values are combined, and explains the order of operations behind the result. Use the worked steps to verify an estimate, compare scenarios, and understand which assumptions or rounding rules can affect the displayed answer.

Four Arithmetic Operations

a+b,a−b,a×b,ab  (b≠0)a+b,\qquad a-b,\qquad a\times b,\qquad \frac{a}{b}\;(b\ne0)

Addition combines values, subtraction finds a signed difference, multiplication scales a value, and division splits one value by a nonzero divisor.

Order of Operations

multiplication and division  ⟶  addition and subtraction\text{multiplication and division}\;\longrightarrow\;\text{addition and subtraction}

The calculator applies precedence before evaluating operations at the same level from left to right.

Percentage Conversion

p%=p100p\%=\frac{p}{100}

A percentage is a number divided by 100. For example, 25% becomes 0.25 before it is used in arithmetic.
