Soil Calculator Examples for Raised Beds, Lawns, and Bags
Follow checked soil examples for an 8 by 4 raised bed, lawn topdressing, liter bags, bulk weight, extra soil, and bulk-versus-bagged material cost.
How should you use these Soil Calculator examples?
These examples turn the Soil Calculator inputs into complete scenarios with stated values, calculation steps, and interpreted results. Use them to check how the calculator behaves, compare your own situation with realistic cases, and identify which inputs have the greatest effect before relying on an estimate.
Example 1: 8 ft by 4 ft Raised Bed
A raised bed 8 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 12 inches deep contains:
At 75 lb/ft³, net weight is 2,400 lb. With 10% extra soil, order volume is 35.20 ft³, or about 1.304 yd³.
Example 2: Whole 2-Cubic-Foot Bags
The 35.20 ft³ order from Example 1 divided by an entered 2.00 ft³ per bag equals 17.60. Since partial bags are not counted as purchasable packages, the result rounds up to 18 whole bags.
Example 3: Lawn Topdressing
A 30 ft × 20 ft lawn covered 1 inch deep contains 50.00 ft³, or about 1.852 yd³, before extra soil. At a one-inch depth, one cubic yard covers 324.00 ft².
Example 4: Metric Garden Bed
A 4 m × 2 m garden bed filled 20 cm deep contains 1.60 m³, or 1,600 liters. A 5% allowance produces 1.68 m³. With 40-liter bags, the order requires 42 whole bags.
Example 5: Bulk and Bagged Cost
If the raised-bed order is 1.304 cubic yards and bulk soil costs $52 per cubic yard, estimated bulk material cost is about $67.79. If 18 bags cost $7.50 each, estimated bagged material cost is $135.00. Delivery, handling, taxes, and leftover product are not included.
Compare the Examples
| Scenario | Key assumption | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Raised garden bed | 75 lb/ft³ and 10% extra | 1.304 yd³ ordered |
| Whole soil bags | 2 ft³ per bag | 18 bags |
| Lawn topdressing | 1 in finished depth | 324 ft² per yd³ |
| Metric garden bed | 40 L bags and 5% extra | 42 bags |
| Cost comparison | $52/yd³ versus $7.50/bag | $67.79 bulk / $135 bagged |
