Gravel Calculator Examples for Driveways and Landscaping

Follow checked examples for gravel cubic yards, tons, extra material, coverage, truckloads, and cost using editable dimensions and density.

How should you use these Gravel Calculator examples?

These examples turn the Gravel Calculator inputs into complete scenarios with stated values, calculation steps, and interpreted results. Use them to check how the calculator behaves, compare your own situation with realistic cases, and identify which inputs have the greatest effect before relying on an estimate.

Example 1: 20 ft by 10 ft at 4 in

A rectangular gravel area 20 feet long and 10 feet wide at 4 inches finished depth contains:

20×10×412=66.667 ft3=2.469 yd320\times10\times\frac{4}{12}=66.667\ ft^3=2.469\ yd^3

At 100 lb/ft³, net weight is 6,666.67 lb, or 3.333 US tons. With 10% extra material, order volume is 2.716 yd³ and order weight is 3.667 US tons.

Example 2: Landscape Path

A 40 ft × 3 ft path at 2 in finished depth contains 20.00 ft³, or 0.741 yd³. At an entered density of 95 lb/ft³, it weighs 0.950 US ton before extra material. A supplier density for the selected decorative gravel should replace the example value.

Example 3: Metric Gravel Bed

A 12 m × 2 m bed at 75 mm finished depth contains 1.800 m³. At an entered bulk density of 1,650 kg/m³, the net weight is 2.970 metric tonnes. A 5% allowance produces 1.890 m³ and approximately 3.119 metric tonnes.

Example 4: Truckloads and Material Price

If the calculated order is 8.40 US tons and usable truck capacity is 5.00 tons, the planning result is two truckloads because a partial third quotient rounds upward. At $48 per US ton, estimated material cost is $403.20 before delivery and other charges.

Reproduce an Example

  1. Open the Gravel Calculator.
  2. Enter the stated length, width, finished depth, and units.
  3. Set Number of areas to 1.
  4. Enter the stated density and extra-material percentage.
  5. Enter capacity or price when the example uses them.
  6. Select Calculate and compare the engine-backed result with the displayed value.
