GPA Formula for Credits and Targets
Learn the quality-point, semester, weighted, cumulative, and target GPA formulas with variable definitions, assumptions, and a checked calculation.
How do the GPA Calculator formulas work?
This formula page defines the variables used by the GPA Calculator, shows how those values are combined, and explains the order of operations behind the result. Use the worked steps to verify an estimate, compare scenarios, and understand which assumptions or rounding rules can affect the displayed answer.
GPA Formula Overview
GPA is a weighted average. Each included course contributes its grade-point value multiplied by its GPA credits. The sum of those quality points is divided by the sum of the included credits.
GPA Formula Variable Definitions
| Variable | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Qᵢ | Quality points contributed by course i |
| Cᵢ | GPA-counted credits for course i |
| Gᵢ | Base grade points assigned to course i |
| Bᵢ | User-entered weighted-course bonus for course i |
| n | Number of included courses |
| Qterm | Total current-term quality points |
| Cterm | Total included current-term credits |
Quality Points for One Course
A four-credit course with a 3.70 grade-point value contributes 14.80 quality points. An excluded course contributes neither credits nor quality points in this calculator.
Semester GPA Formula
This formula preserves the relative influence of courses with different credit values. It is not the simple average of the course grade points unless every course has the same credits.
Weighted GPA Formula
Bᵢ is zero for a regular course and equals the Honors or AP/IB/advanced bonus entered in Settings for a designated course. The calculator does not impose a universal weighting policy.
Updated Cumulative GPA Formula
Multiplying the prior GPA by its prior GPA credits reconstructs the prior quality-point total. Current quality points and credits can then be added before division.
Required GPA to Reach a Target
If the required result exceeds the maximum GPA entered, the target is not reachable within those additional credits under this model. If it is zero or less, the target is already met mathematically.
Worked GPA Formula Calculation
Four courses total 14 credits and 49.00 quality points:
If the student previously had a 3.20 GPA over 45 credits, the new cumulative estimate is:
Precision, Rounding, and Assumptions
- Decimal.js retains base-10 precision through intermediate course and total calculations.
- Displayed GPA values round to two decimal places; a school may round, truncate, or store more digits.
- The entered grade scale, percentage bands, bonuses, included courses, and credits are treated as the applicable rules.
- Repeat replacement, transfer-credit handling, academic forgiveness, and other institutional policies are not inferred automatically.
GPA Formula Frequently Asked Questions
Why are credit hours in the formula?
Credits are the weights. They ensure a higher-credit course contributes more to the average than a lower-credit course. For a useful GPA Calculator formula result, use realistic inputs, compare relevant scenarios, and review the stated assumptions before making a decision.
Why multiply prior GPA by prior credits?
A GPA is already an average. Multiplication reconstructs the quality-point numerator before new quality points are added. For a useful GPA Calculator formula result, enter realistic values, compare relevant scenarios, check the calculation details, and review the definitions, assumptions, and limitations before using the estimate for an important decision.
Can I average two semester GPAs directly?
Only if both semesters have exactly the same GPA-counted credits. Otherwise, combine their quality points and credits. For a useful GPA Calculator formula result, enter realistic values, compare relevant scenarios, check the calculation details, and review the definitions, assumptions, and limitations before using the estimate for an important decision.
