Fence Calculator Examples for Posts, Pickets, and Panels

Follow checked fence examples for a 100-foot picket fence, gates, rails, concrete, fasteners, packages, panel layouts, metric inputs, and cost.

How should you use these Fence Calculator examples?

These examples turn the Fence Calculator inputs into complete scenarios with stated values, calculation steps, and interpreted results. Use them to check how the calculator behaves, compare your own situation with realistic cases, and identify which inputs have the greatest effect before relying on an estimate.

Example 1: 100 ft Picket Fence with One Gate

A 100 ft run with one 4 ft gate leaves 96 ft of solid fence. At an entered maximum post spacing of 8 ft, the solid fence needs 12 sections. The gate adds one span, and one independent run adds its starting post, producing 14 posts.

Example 2: Rails and Pickets

At three rails per solid section, 12 sections need 36 rails. A 5.5 inch picket plus a 0.125 inch gap creates a 5.625 inch module. Dividing 1,152 inches of solid fence by that module and rounding upward produces 205 base pickets.

Example 3: Extra Material and Package Rounding

Adding 10% produces an order target of 226 pickets. With six pickets per package, 38 packages provide 228 purchased pickets. That is 23 more than the 205-piece geometry-only base count.

Example 4: Concrete, Fasteners, and Entered Cost

At two concrete bags per post, the estimate is 28 bags. At six fasteners per order picket and 100 per package, the estimate is 1,356 fasteners or 14 packages. With the calculator's reproducible starting prices, the itemized entered cost totals $1,796.

Example 5: 60 ft Panel Fence

A 60 ft run with no gates and 6 ft panels needs 10 solid sections and 11 posts for one continuous run. With no extra allowance and one panel per package, the base and purchased quantities are both 10 panels. Rails are reported as included in the panels.

Example 6: Equivalent Metric Inputs

30.48 m equals 100 ft, 1.2192 m equals a 4 ft gate, and 2.4384 m equals 8 ft spacing. Pickets measuring 13.97 cm with a 0.3175 cm gap reproduce the same 14-post and 205-base-picket result.

Reproduce an Example

  1. Open the Fence Calculator.
  2. Select Pickets and rails or Preassembled panels.
  3. Enter the stated length, runs, gates, and spacing or panel width.
  4. Enter the stated picket, rail, package, concrete, and fastener assumptions.
  5. Enter prices only when reproducing the cost example.
  6. Select Calculate and compare the engine-backed result with the displayed value.
