Currency Conversion Formula and Cross Exchange Rates
Learn the currency conversion formula, USD-based cross-rates, inverse exchange rates, rate-table calculations, precision, and worked examples.
How do the Currency Converter formulas work?
This formula page defines the variables used by the Currency Converter, shows how those values are combined, and explains the order of operations behind the result. Use the worked steps to verify an estimate, compare scenarios, and understand which assumptions or rounding rules can affect the displayed answer.
Formula Overview
The provider returns one table in which each rate represents units of that currency per one US dollar. The calculator derives the requested pair from two entries in that same table, then applies the cross-rate to the entered amount.
Variable Definitions
- Afrom: amount entered in the source currency
- Ato: calculated amount in the destination currency
- rfrom: provider rate for the source currency per USD
- rto: provider rate for the destination currency per USD
- Rfrom→to: derived direct cross-rate
- Rto→from: inverse cross-rate
USD-Based Cross-Rate Formula
Because both provider rates share the same USD base, dividing them cancels the base and produces the requested pair. If the source currency is USD, its rate is one and the formula reduces to the destination rate.
Converted Amount Formula
The calculator requires a positive amount and valid positive rates for both selected currencies.
Inverse Exchange Rate
The direct and inverse quotes describe the same relationship from opposite directions. Small display-rounding differences can appear if a rounded quote is manually inverted.
Market Exchange-Rate Table Formula
Each table cell uses the same division. The row currency acts as the source and the column currency acts as the destination. In the focused all-currency table, the first value is row-to-selected-base and the parenthetical value is its inverse.
Worked Cross-Rate Calculation
Suppose one rate snapshot contains EUR 0.92 per USD and GBP 0.80 per USD. For EUR 100 converted to GBP:
The interface displays the amount as GBP 86.957 when three fractional digits are available. This fixture illustrates the formula; the live calculator uses the rate snapshot it loads.
Precision and Rounding
Decimal.js performs the division and multiplication with base-10 decimal arithmetic and retains additional intermediate precision. The interface and PDF format rates and amounts to no more than three decimal places. Do not repeatedly calculate with copied rounded outputs when exact reconciliation matters.
Assumptions and Boundaries
- The provider response base is USD.
- Every selected rate is finite, positive, and belongs to the same timestamped response.
- The entered amount is greater than zero and no more than one trillion.
- The result excludes retail spreads, fixed charges, percentage fees, and taxes.
- The converter does not provide historical, guaranteed, or executable market quotes.
- Currency availability follows the provider response and configured plan.
