Asphalt Calculator Examples for Driveways and Paving

Follow checked asphalt tonnage examples using driveway dimensions, compacted thickness, mix density, waste, truck capacity, and material price.

How should you use these Asphalt Calculator examples?

These examples turn the Asphalt Calculator inputs into complete scenarios with stated values, calculation steps, and interpreted results. Use them to check how the calculator behaves, compare your own situation with realistic cases, and identify which inputs have the greatest effect before relying on an estimate.

Example 1: 10 ft by 25 ft at 4 in

The Asphalt Institute estimating example uses a 10 ft by 25 ft area at 4 in thick. Its compacted volume is:

10×25×412=83.333 ft310\times25\times\frac{4}{12}=83.333\ ft^3

At 148 lb/ft³, the weight is 12,333.33 lb, or 6.167 US tons before waste. The published example rounds this to about 6.1 tons.

Example 2: Editable FHWA Density

Using the calculator's starting density of 145.2 lb/ft³ for the same geometry produces 6.050 US tons net. With 5% waste, the planning order becomes 6.353 US tons. This difference shows why project density should remain visible.

Example 3: Metric Paving Area

A 20 m by 5 m paved area at 75 mm compacted thickness has 7.5 m³ of compacted volume. At an entered density of 2,325 kg/m³, the net weight is 17.438 metric tonnes. Add only the waste allowance appropriate to the project.

Example 4: Truckloads and Material Price

If an order weighs 42 US tons and usable truck capacity is 20 US tons, the planning result is three truckloads. At an entered material price of $115 per US ton, material cost is $4,830 before delivery and other project costs.

Reproduce an Example

  1. Open the Asphalt Calculator.
  2. Enter the stated dimensions and compacted thickness.
  3. Set Number of areas to 1.
  4. Enter the stated density and waste percentage.
  5. Select Calculate and compare the engine-backed result with the displayed value.
