Birthday and Exact Age Calculation Formulas
Understand the Birthday Calculator formulas for complete calendar months, remaining days, leap years, total elapsed units, and next birthdays.
How do the Birthday Calculator formulas work?
This formula page defines the variables used by the Birthday Calculator, shows how those values are combined, and explains the order of operations behind the result. Use the worked steps to verify an estimate, compare scenarios, and understand which assumptions or rounding rules can affect the displayed answer.
Formula Overview
The age engine separates calendar age from total elapsed time. Calendar age counts complete month anniversaries, then splits those months into years and months. Total elapsed units come from the normalized whole-day difference.
This avoids assuming that every month has 30 days or every year has 365 days.
Variable Definitions
Let B be the starting date, R the reference date, M the greatest number of complete clamped calendar months from B to R, and D the remaining whole days after that month anchor.
Complete Calendar Months
The preliminary month difference is reduced by one when adding that many months to the starting date would pass the reference date. Month addition clamps an unavailable day to the destination month's final valid day.
Years, Months, and Remaining Days
Y is the number of complete years, m is the remaining number of complete months, and d is the whole-day difference between the month anchor and reference date.
Leap-Year Rule
Years divisible by 4 are leap years except century years not divisible by 400.
Total Elapsed Days
For normalized UTC calendar dates, divide the millisecond difference by the milliseconds in a day.
Inclusive Counting
Inclusive counting adds one only when both start and end dates are meant to be counted.
Derived Elapsed Units
W gives complete elapsed weeks. H, N, and S are date-based hours, minutes, and seconds derived from whole days, not a precise time-of-day interval.
Next Birthday Rule
Create the birthday anniversary in the reference year. If it is earlier than the reference date, use the following year. A February 29 birth date is clamped to February 28 in a non-leap year for this calculator's countdown.
Assumptions and Boundaries
The reference date must be on or after the starting date. Dates use the proleptic Gregorian calendar and are normalized in UTC to avoid daylight-saving shifts.
The formula does not determine legal age, eligibility, time-zone-adjusted age, or age from an exact birth time.
